Service Marketing-Pizza Hut Essay A subsidiary of PepsiCo, Inc. , the company oversees more than 11,000 pizza restaurants and delivery outlets in 90 countries worldwide. In October 1997, the company expected to become a subsidiary of Tricon Global Restaurants, Inc. , formed from the spin-off of PepsiCos restaurant holdings. Pizza Hut was founded in 1958 by brothers Dan and Frank Carney in their hometown of Wichita, Kansas. When a friend suggested opening a pizza parlorthen a raritythey agreed that the idea could prove successful, and they borrowed $600 from their mother to start a business with partner John Bender. Renting a small building at 503 South Bluff in downtown Wichita and purchasing secondhand equipment to make pizzas, the Carneys and Bender opened the first Pizza Hut restaurant; on opening night, they gave pizza away to encourage community interest. A year later, in 1959, Pizza Hut was incorporated in Kansas, and Dick Hassur opened the first franchise unit in Topeka, Kansas. In the early 1960s Pizza Hut grew on the strength of aggressive marketing of the pizza restaurant idea. In 1962, the Carney brothers bought out the interest held by Bender, and Robert Chisholm joined the company as treasurer. In 1966, when the number of Pizza Hut franchise units had grown to 145, a home office was established to coordinate the businesses from Wichita. Two years later, the first Pizza Hut franchise was opened in Canada. This was followed by the establishment of the International Pizza Hut Franchise Holders Association (IPHFHA). It aimed at acquiring 40 percent of the companys franchise operations, or 120 stores, and adding them to the six outlets wholly owned by Pizza Hut. The acquisitions, however, brought turmoil to the chain. Varied accounting systems used by the previous franchise owners had to be merged into one operating system, a process that took eight months to complete. In the meantime, sales flattened and profits tumbled. In early 1970 Frank Carney decided that the company practice of relying on statistics from its annual report to inform its business strategy was inadequate, and that a more developed, long-term business plan was necessary. The turning point occurred when Pizza Hut went public and began growing at an unprecedented pace. Pizza Huts corporate strategy, arrived at after much consultation and boardroom debate, emerged in 1972. The corporate strategys first priority was increasing sales and profits for the chain. Continuing to build a strong financial base for the company to provide adequate financing for growth was the second priority. The strategy also called for adding new restaurants to the chain in emerging and growing markets. In 1970 Pizza Hut opened units in Munich, Germany, and Sydney, Australia. That same year, the chains 500th restaurant opened, in Nashville, Tennessee. Further acquisitions that year included an 80 percent stake in Ready Italy, a frozen crust maker, and a joint venture, Sunflower Food Processors, formed with Sunflower Beef, Inc. The same year, the menus for all restaurants added sandwiches to the staple Thin n Crispy pizza offering. In 1971 Pizza Hut became the worlds largest pizza chain, according to sales and number of restaurantsthen just more than 1,000 in all. A year later the chain gained a listing on the New York Stock Exchange. Pizza Hut also achieved, for the first time, a one million dollar sales week in the U. S. market. At the end of 1972 Pizza Hut made its long-anticipated offer of 410,000 shares of common stock to the public. The company expanded by purchasing three restaurant divisions: Taco Kid, Next Door, and the Flaming Steer. In addition, Pizza Hut acquired Franchise Services, Inc. , a restaurant supply company, and J G Food Company, Inc. , a food and supplies distributor. The company also added a second distribution center in Peoria, Illinois. In 1973 Pizza Hut expanded further by opening outlets in Japan and Great Britain. Three years later the chain had more than 100 restaurants outside the United States and two thousand units in its franchise network. The companys 2,000th restaurant was opened in Independence, Missouri.

Effective communication is an important factor for the success of any organization but there are certain barriers that cause failure in effective communication. Effective communication is necessary in every organization, without proper communication no organization can run because organization consists of people and people are interdependent on each other so it is necessary to identify those factors that become hurdles in communication. Scenario 1: Successful Organizational Communication When I was doing internship at bank I had some problems, I was new there and was not fully aware about the organizational procedures, once my manager told me to prepare the list of those customers whose account balances are below desired average and then call them. As I was new there and didn’t know the process well so I asked my colleague to help me out but due to work pressure he couldn’t help me. I was very worried because the deadline to complete the task was near, so I decided to talk to my manager I told him that I am not fully aware about the organizational process. My manager was a very nice person he listened to me carefully and explained me the procedure to complete the task, he gave me some very useful advises and due to proper communication I completed my task within the deadline. Evaluation and Analysis: Effective communication means transfer of complete information from one person to another person or from one group to another group. Managers must possess good communication skills because they have to deal with their subordinates. The above scenario descries that communication skills of the manager is very good. The manager is considered as good manager because he is able to effectively communicate with the employee (Eisenberg, 2009). Some people naturally possess communication skills and some develop their skills by learning. The manager has the ability to lighten up a conversation and inspire employee to explain the problem and work according to the requirements. Good communication is a two way process and in the above scenario manager and employee both get the result of their conversation (van Vuuren, de Jong, Seydel, 2007). Factors that help in successful communication: Effective communication is necessary to survive in this society and in any organization, it helps us to understand a situation or a person and to solve problems, differences and to build trust. Clarity of message: Clarity is very necessary for effective communication. Communicator must be clear about the goal or the message which he wants to communicate because if the communicator is not clear about the message then he cannot convert the message properly to other person. In the above scenario I was clear about my problem so I effectively communicated my problem with the manager. Conciseness: In the above scenario the message was concise and effectively communicated with the manager, the benefit of conciseness is that you can stick to the main point and briefly define it. In this fast paced society nobody has time to listen to your worries for half an hour. For an effective communication it becomes necessary that your message should be concise and clear (Bambacas, Patrickson, 2008). Concreteness: The message should be concrete because concrete message can give the clear picture to the audience of what a communicator is trying to telling them. Vague messages and vivid facts confuse the audience and the objective of communication will fail (Bambacas, Patrickson, 2008). Familiarity: According to Ashcraft, Kuhn, Cooren (2009), for effective communication it is important to use familiar images and words. Irrelevant words and images transfer audience attention towards irrelevant point. Familiar examples plays very important role in effective communication and helps communicator to create an emotional bond with the audience. Coherent: When your communication is consistent, it’s coherent. For communicating effectively you should connects all the points to make the topic relevant and logical. Non-consistency creates trouble for the audience to understand your message. In the described scenario the message was coherent and that’s why manager understood the problem of his employee (Espaà ±a, Gonzà ¡lez, Pastor, 2009). Voice Tone: Voice tone creates an especial effect in communication. Same words with different tone can be perceived differently and portray different meaning. You cannot speak to all in the same way. For effective communication it is important to make sure that the tone is right so that it will help audience to get the message properly (Miller, 2014). Completeness: Message should be complete because most of the time incomplete messages become the reason of miscommunication. In the above scenario complete message was communicated and become one of the reasons for successful communication (Myers, Sadaghiani, 2010). Courtesy: Courteous communication is open, friendly and honest. There are no harsh words and tone in courteous communication. People prefer courteous communication because courtesy creates the feeling of sympathy and respect between communicator and audience. Nobody likes to hear harsh words so courtesy plays important role in effective communication (Bambacas, Patrickson, 2008). Make request not demand: Demands can create resistance in audience and limit dialogue. For effective communication it is necessary to use soft tone and persuade others to listen. Arrogant tone and demand creates negative impact on others. In the described scenario request to the manager solved the problem (Ashcraft, Kuhn, Cooren, 2009). For the success of any organization effective communication is necessary. Organizations often consider poor communication as their biggest barrier for the success. Therefore, organizations conduct effective training programs. By proper training communication skills can be developed in employees and helps to reduce those errors which occur due to miscommunication (Miller, 2014). Scenario 2: Ineffective organizational communication When I was working as a sales person in a group of 8 members, I observed a scenario of miscommunication. My sales manager told one of my team members that he is very slow in achieving his target and he has to increase his sales progress within a quarter. He misunderstood the word quarter and thought that he has a quarter of year, while according to the manager the quarter means quarter of a month (Johansson, Heide, 2008). After quarter of a month when my manager asked him to show his progress he said he still have time and he will achieve his target within the time limit. The manager got angry told my colleague that it’s his last chance to show his progress otherwise he will be fired from the job. According to my colleague that was manager’s fault, he had to mention that he was talking about quarter of a month. Due to ineffective communication my colleague didn’t get his bonus (Welch, Jackson, 2007). Evaluation and Analysis: Ineffective communication creates serious problems within an organization. Poor communication can hinder the efficiency of an organization. Vague messages and irrelevant examples distract the employees (Ashcraft, Kuhn, Cooren, 2009). Barriers to Effective Communication in an Organization The specific employee could not achieved to ask the exactly detail about the spoken word of his manager. This led him fall in trouble. The lack of understanding and lack of explanation ascent the communicational gap, ultimately resulting in halting appraisal and other promotional work. Here are some of the most common barriers which can be found in an organization while communicating. Perceptual Barrier: It is the most common issues which individuals are facing these days and the above given scenario is an appropriate example of this barrier. Diverse perception of every person gives rise to a requirement for effective and efficient communication (Espaà ±a, Gonzà ¡lez, Pastor, 2009). In the above scenario my group member took the orders in another way because the sales manager was not clear when he was giving orders to him. Language Barrier: Language that explains what anyone would want to communicate and express to others. In today’s fastest changing globalized world of business, the maximum accolade that one can pay to another is by effectively and clearly communicating and speaking to them in their own language. People need to comprehend that the workers’ native language can be different from others. In the above scenario the language of the group member was as same as the manager but the problem arise when the manager used word quarter. And the group member misinterpreted it (Welch, Jackson, 2007). Failing to ask for Explanation: There is nothing wrong in not understanding anything, one can ask for explanation but it’s a poor approach not to ask for explanation to that person. In the above scenario the same thing happened the group mate did not ask the manager for further clarification of the order. Channel Problem: The channel used by the manager would not be so much proper. Non appropriate channel provides the weak information. Channel and mode of communication is much necessary. If the black and white circular has been given to him then the matter would be unbridle and employee could not be misunderstood. The utilization of channel by the manger of that specific company should be realized appropriately (Bambacas, Patrickson, 2008). This is the matter how the manager would be professional, a professional manager only expect the professional attitude of the employee. If the channel (verbal) used by manager could not be used and transformed other channel like (non verbal) then matter clarifies and also proved in black and white saved to claim. Emotions: Another barrier is emotion. It is also consider as a major barrier within communication and fail to maintain the good communication process. This problem leads an organization more into peril and complete blockage in the barrier of the achievements. At that time specific staff was with hatred sentiment in fear position, while the manager was angry. In mean while no one more focus on month or year. On one hand fear control brain to ask question while on other side feelings covers head to define dead line exactly (Espaà ±a, Gonzà ¡lez, Pastor, 2009). Lack of Feedback: Before completion of entire process of communication, no one can say that it is effective communication (Johansson, Heide, 2008). Lack of feedback is a major blockage in path of achievement. Effective communication cannot be done without using the proper channel of feedback. If specific employee responds at the spot, so all the matters were cleared and he could achieve his target with in deadline. In this continuation, if the manager emphasizes on feed back then he could be in a position to evaluate more appropriately about the situation and perception of the employee. Lack of clarity: To avoid the ineffective communication the matter (message) should be cleared enough to provide all the information regarding topic. Manager though failed to produce clear and effective matter that provides the information about the dead line. Ultimately leads employee into demotion and fell him into hot water. If the massage was cleared and calmly penetrated then the communication gap could not be found. Ineffective communication could not only impact only on staffs but also pull an organization from achieving its very and prescribed goals (Bambacas, Patrickson, 2008). In today’s world, where everything is publicized through tabloids and social media, it seems as if nothing can be kept quiet. Many years ago, this was also encouraged in things such as poetry and writing, â€Å"this† being the expression of ones feelings and issues. However some writers looked the other way in regard to this confessional style of poetry, one of the most well known being Elizabeth Bishop. She rarely used her poetry to depress her readers with gloom, and if she did, it was hidden deep between metaphors and similes, all types of figurative language. Bishop was unquestionably one of the greatest American poets, heavily due to the obstacles she has faced and the vast travels she has experienced, which majorly influence her writing as well as the themes of most of her poems, these types of themes are especially evident in her poem, â€Å"One Art.† Elizabeth was an American poet and writer that left a lasting influence on American Poetry. Through her difficult childhood and broad travels, her two very important influences, and lastly her incredibly unique ability to write, she became one the greatest poets America has ever known. Elizabeth was born on February 8th, 1911 in Worcester Massachusetts. Her father passed away before she was even 1 year old, later leading to her mother’s mental sickness. Her mom was hospitalized and admitted into multiple metal asylums, never to see her daughter again. In addition to a childhood without parental influence, she suffered from chronic asthma and was often very ill. Being an only child, Elizabeth didn't have any siblings or important figures to turn to either. Between the ages 3 to 6, Bishop lived with her mom’s parents, but was then later taken into custody by her fathers’ parents. When s... ... loss of that â€Å"you† in the poem has caused her, most likely a loved one, like her deceased wife or father. Without a doubt, Elizabeth Bishop was a great writer who was remunerated with many prestigious awards that reflected her highly regarded poetic work. Her wide capability to capture her perspective of the world through words and her way of disguising her own sorrowful life in her language allowed her to write about these themes in a unique way. She was generally reviewed in a good light by critics, and writes in a way that is easy to follow and interesting to read. Bishop once said â€Å" All my life I have lived and behaved very much like the sandpiper- just running down the edges of different countries and continents, ‘looking for something.† Well its safe to say what she found was an undeniable talent, a talent greatly admired by most readers like myself.

Opponents of NAFTA argued passionately, but unsuccessfully, that the treaty should not be adopted because of the negative impact it would have on employment in the United States, particularly in industries such as textiles. A glance at the data four years after the passage of NAFTA suggests the critics had a point. Between 1994 and mid-1997, about 149,000 US apparel workers lost their jobs, over 15 percent of all employment in the industry. Much of this job loss has occurred because producers have moved production to Mexico. Between 1994 and 1997, Mexico's apparel exports to the United States trebled to $3.3 billion. In 1993, the US jeans maker, Guess?, sourced 95 percent of its product domestically. Now it gets about 60 percent of its clothing from o utside the United States, with Mexico as one of the biggest suppliers. Similarly, in 1995, Fruit of the Loom Inc., the largest manufacturer of underwear in the United States, said it would close six of its domestic plants and cut back operations at two others, laying off about 3,200 workers, or 12 percent of its US work force. The incandescent light bulb, since its fairly recent invention, has quickly become a basic essential of modern technological life as we know it. It took many years to create an practical bulb despite the simplicity of its structure. I believe a majority of us take them completely for granted as a normal part of life. Early man knew the sun as his lightsource and when the sun set, he knew the moon and the stars. As his intelligence increased and he learned about the world in which he lived he became associated with fire. Fire could be used for warmth, cooking, protection, and light. Man lived with this for years, elaborating and improving the way the fire was created and burned for light, until the year of 1809 when one man, an English chemist by the name of Humphrey Davy began the search for a usable incandescent light source using electricity. Using a high powered battery to induce a current between two high powered strips he produced an intense incandescent light, which became known as the first arc lamp. Although it was a first step it was not yet a practical light source. The first known attempt to make a actual bulb didn't come until 1920 when Warren De la Rue enclosed a coil of platinum wire in an evacuated tube and passed an electrical current through it. Although a platinum light bulb was not practical the idea behind his design was. A metal with a high melting point to achieve high temperature and thus bright light, as well as an evacuated tube that contained less particles to react with the metal and thus an elongated bulb life. Throughout the next few decades scientists labored to create their "efficient" light bulb. Their main hurdle was finding a low cost, long lived, high temperature filament material that would glow with high intensity. In 1879 two scientist, Joseph Wilson Swan and Thomas A Edison, had independent breakthroughs for a longer lasting incandecent bulb with their use of a carbon fiber filament derived from cotton. It lasted a maximum of 13.5 hours. In 1880 Edison also developed a filament derived from bamboo which lasted up to 1200 hours. This was good, but to create a truly efficient bulb something different was need to creae a filament with very high temperatures but without degeneration and loss of heat. Many elements were experimented with, a few of the most popular which were carbon, osmium, and tantalum.

Ethical Reflection on the Manhattan Project Essay

The Manhattan Project is the code name for the US government’s secret project that was established before World War II and culminated in the development of the nuclear bomb. From 1942 to 1946, the project was under the direction of Major General Leslie Groves of the US Army Corps of Engineers. It employs more than 130,000 people and cost nearly US$2 billion (roughly equivalent to $25.8 billion as of 2013). Over 90% of the cost was for building factories and producing the fissionable materials, with less than 10% for development and production of the weapons. At that time Hitler was building an atomic bomb obscurely and would use it in the war against the allies to turn the tables. The necessity and ethical responsibilities are clear cut. If the allies didn’t develop the nuclear bomb before Germany, they will suffer heavy loss and casualty in view of the huge destructive power of nuclear bomb. Hitler can even threat the allies to use the bomb on the civilians to force the allies to compromise to reach his strategic target. In 1945, two atomic bombs produced by the project were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, which accelerate the pace of Japan’s haul down their flag and prevent the meaningless and desperate resistance of Japan. The project is proposed by many prominent physicists including Albert Einstein to the US government at that time. It is considered as a fast and efficient method to end the catastrophe and avoid even more loss and casualty to the human being as a whole. From this aspect, it is deontologically righteous. However, it is difficult to decide it from the aspect of consequentialism and virtue ethics because we need a long period to judge the consequence or reflect on ethics. It is controversial both at that time and in the future. It accelerates the ending of the great calamity with the expense of destructive environmental impact and the lives of many civilians in the two cities. It provides a great amount clean energy in view of the pressing energy shortage while open the Pandora box for human being. It develops the subtle balance between big powers to avoid the war while possibly knells the bell for the civilization and the earth.

Christmas Carol Text Repsonse Essay

â€Å"In A Christmas Carol, Dickens delivers strong criticisms of the society in which he lives. Discuss† A Christmas Carol written by one of the most influential social reform novelists of the nineteenth century, Charles Dickens, delivers very harsh criticisms of Victorian London. Dickens presents these criticisms through the behaviour of the novella’s protagonist, Ebenezer Scrooge. His character displays everything that Dickens perceives as being wrong in Victorian society. His treatment of the poor and destitute, the treatment of his employee Bob Crachit and the weak relationships he keeps with family are all indirect criticisms by the renowned author, Dickens. The poor in Victorian London were left in very poor living conditions, and were essentially ignored by the upper class. There was a huge segregation between the lower class and upper class. Dickens implies that those with excessive wealth and power had a responsibility to take care of those less fortunate than themselves. This idea is explored between the relationship of Scrooge and his clerk, Bob Crachit. Scrooge is completely ignorant of his responsibilities and duties to Crachit. When asked what donations Scrooge would like to give to the poor, he simply states â€Å"Nothing!†. This shows that Scrooge (and the upper class society) simply have no compassion or consideration for the poor living below them. The children ignorance and want are an addition by dickens to send a simple message, to help out those in want, and beware of ignorance in oneself and others. The main protagonist of the story, Ebenezer Scrooge embodies the worst qualities of Victorian society. Obsessed with accumulating wealth and with no concern for his beleaguered employee, Scrooge is an allegorical representation of the forces of capitalism driving the industrial economy at the time. The treatment of loved ones and relationships are key in A Christmas Carol. The main relationship emphasized by Dickens is the relationship between Scrooge and his nephew, Fred. Scrooge does not even slightly value his  relationship with Fred. He refuses any affection or invitations given by Fred, shows no interest in Fred’s life and does not show any remorse towards these actions. This is also a criticism by Dickens. He is implying that the excessive and overbearing need for wealth and power ruin the relationships shared between people. In Scrooge, this is not only shown through his lack of a relationship with Fred, but also with his relationship with Belle, and ultimately its downfall. The festive and face value of A Christmas Carol provides an entertaining and light-hearted story for readers. However, beneath this heart-warming transformation of a character there are strong criticisms of Victorian society delivered by Dickens. He criticizes the way that the poor are left to fend for themselves in terrible conditions, the way the poor are treated by the upper class tear of society, and through the use of weak value placed relationships with family and friends during the time. Dickens novella was intended to point out the flaws in the society in which he lived and make it’s readers aware and cautious of these near fatal traits.
